Domain Name Sales Tip: Less is More

When selling domain names you need to consider what goes through the mind of potential buyers.  Almost all domain sales marketplaces allow domain sellers to list multiple domain names for sale, be it domain forum posts, classified listings, email newsletters or auctions.

Large amounts of domain names in a single place can be overwhelming to a buyer.  Even if they find value in several of your names they may be unwilling to make a decision on a specific few and let’s face it, they are not going to buy them all.

This idea can apply to almost any industry.  The fewer options a user has to pick from the better chance they will actually make a purchase.

The phenomenon can be attributed to a buyer’s time spent browsing or shopping.  We all have the equivalent attention span of a goldfish on the internet.  A buyer can easily find 1 or 2 names in a list of 10 very quickly and make an offer or purchase.

Give it a try, start posting sales listings with 10-15 names instead of 50-100.  And it should go without saying that your short list of names must be of good quality and decently priced.

Spread the Word: 5 Reasons to Invest in Domain Names

BuyDomains recently sent out an email message to their small business customers. Thanks to DotWeekly for the find. Within the email was a compelling list of reasons to invest in domain names. Every domainer should commit these reasons to memory to share with others.

Continue reading below to find out how these reasons can improve the domain industry by bringing about many more domain sales.

1. Cost

The cost of acquiring a premium domain names is cheaper than continuously paying for local or regional print advertising.

2. The Internet is King

Customers now look to the internet first where they can find you 24/7. When was the last time you flipped through the Yellow Pages?

3. Geography

You can immediately reach a broader market with the Internet because your site is always available to all potential customers no matter what time it is where they are.

4. Customer Contact

You can more easily stay in touch with your prospects and customers by gathering their email address and interests directly from your website.

5. Measurable and Flexible Marketing Options

Online advertising is easy to track and adjust based on your budget. Dial up or dial down your marketing efforts depending on how well they are generating traffic.

How Can This Help Domainers?

The above reasons to invest in domain names goes along very well with these domain sales scenarios. In most cases a domain sale only takes place if the buyer is informed about the inherent value of the domain name being purchased.

Seller Buyer Domainer
Informed Informed Speculator1
Informed Uninformed No Exchange
Uninformed Informed Investor2
Uninformed Uninformed No Exchange
1. A speculator because the person buying the name on resale is expected to also be informed. Thus, the domainer must believe in either the ease of finding a party who could make better use of a given name or the ability of selling it while prices are on an upward trend.

2. The domainer is an investor who is better informed than the seller; thus, the exchange is not speculative. Obviously the domainer is taking some risk, but that simply means the exchange isn’t arbitrage.

“In the above table, an exchange takes place only if the buyer has a good general understanding of the value of domain names. The seller may or may not have such an understanding. But there is no exchange if the buyer does not.” – Alex Tajirian

DotSauce Upgrades and Updates

DotSauce has survived and thrived through our transition to a new web host. This transition is still in progress and over the next few days you will see new things popping up and some old clutter being swept under the rug.

New Advertising Opportunities

The most prominent changes you will notice are the new sponsored advertising positions. As you can see (take a glance to your right) I have cleaned up the sidebars significantly and made room for a few well positioned graphical advertisements. The text link sponsors have been moved, improved and highlighted as well.

These spaces will sell out shortly, due to demand and affordable pricing.
Please read the sponsors page and contact us if you would like information on discounted ad rates.

New Web Host: Jaguar PC

I am very grateful that I was referred to Jaguar PC from several friends at NamePros. I have continually been impressed with their support staff.

Moving to a new host, you generally encounter a few bumps with domain names, databases and the like. I can not say enough about Jag PC support, those guys are on top of things. And, of course, their servers are lightning fast too!

More Updates on the “To Do” List

It’s about time DotSauce held another giveaway contest as well!
Be on the lookout to win some cool prizes again.

Thank you to all subscribers and readers. If you like to read our articles from your email updates or RSS reader, please stop by DotSauce.com occasionally to check out new content, support out sponsors and get involved with the forum community.

Publishers: How To Bypass Ad Blocking Software

A recent trend in anti-spyware and anti-virus software is to eliminate virtually all graphical advertisements while a user is browsing the internet. The most popular ad blocking software today is the free AdBlock Plus Firefox extension, followed closely by the paid software Norton Anti-Virus.

Let me start of by disclosing a little secret, I use and enjoy AdBlock Plus for Firefox. I know that may lead you to think that I am being hypocritical in writing this guide to bypass AdBlock Plus, however, often times I turn AdBlock Plus off for respectable websites and blogs that I frequent. I should also note that I have not personally followed my own advice yet as I am in the process of renovating my sponsorship model.

Why You Should Bypass Ad Blocking Software

The benefits will mostly be passed on to your sponsors who are paying to place their banners on your blog or website. AdBlock software can often break design elements of your website or make certain areas look awkward. Banner impressions will rise which in turn allows you to charge a higher price for your ad space.

AdBlock Plus is this single most popular Firefox extension to date!

bypass-adblock.jpg

How To Bypass AdBlock Plus

First we must examine why this software is blocking your graphic advertisements through their various filters. Listed below I describe the most common ad block filters.

  • Block URLs to third-party ad servers (Google Ads, FastClick, etc.)
  • Block images of specific sizes (468×60, 125×125, etc.)
  • Block javascript which opens pop-ups (pop-overs, pop-unders, etc.)
  • Block URLs which contain certain words (ad, banner, click, etc.)
  • Block image names with ad sizes (ad468×60.jpg, ad120×60.gif, etc.)

Now it becomes fairly obvious what you must do to bypass adblock filters…

1. Remove “Ad” and “Click”: If you use banner ad management software such as phpAdsNew or a certain WordPress Plugin to manage advertisements make sure it does NOT contain “ad” in the folder name. You should also go one step further and remove the words “ad” or “click” from any and all file names.

2. Use Slightly Altered Ad Sizes: Even if your standard size graphic advertisements are promoting your own business or something very mundane they will still be blocked by default ad blocking filters. The easiest way to bypass this is to add or subtract a few pixels from the width and height of your banner ads. Some examples; use 470×58 not 468×60, use 124×126 not 125×125, use 122×58 not 120×60.

3. Host Locally and Name Wisely: It would be nice of you to inform your sponsors that you are modifying the banner ad sizes slightly so that they may ensure their images are not distorted. You should always host the images on your own server and never include pixel sizes or the words “ad” or “banner” in the names of your image files.

Publish Advertisements Wisely

As a general rule for good publishing you should be selective of your sponsors. Don’t run loud and obnoxious, blinking, obtrusive advertisements in the middle of your content. This is why people install AdBlock Plus in the first place. Be smart and try to put youself in your visitor’s shoes.

Advertising Sales: Must Have WordPress Plugin

21 year old web developer Simon Emery has created an advanced WordPress plugin which completely manages all your direct advertising sales. After stumbling upon this unique plugin, I immediately purchased OIO Publisher and installed it on DotSauce Magazine.

Intelligent and Customizeable

The process of installing OIO Publisher went as smoothly as all WordPress plugins generally do. I emailed Simon shortly afterwards asking which file I needed to edit to customize the paid text link style output. He responded very promptly and pointed me to the elusive /include/output.php file.

Everything was setup and ready to accept direct advertising sales in a matter of an hour or so. I cut out the middle man entirely and get 100% revenue from my generous DotSauce sponsors.

oio-business-tab.png

OIO Administration Panel

The OIO Publisher administration is very simple and user friendly. The “Business” dashboard allows you to get updates and edit settings. There are tabbed sections for managing purchases, email templates and your affiliate program.

oio-alert.png

Suggested Modifications

Soon after I finished customizing my installation, I received this concerned email from a DotSauce visitor.

“I clicked on the “Advertise Here” by curiosity about the advertising deal. But I did not get any info, if you are selling ad space in a flat fee, ppc, cpm, … basis, nor your ad rates. But a form already asking me my name, email, how I am going to pay…

STOP! If you want to sell advertising, trust me, the FIRST thing you should do is inform potential advertisers about your ad deal. Otherwise advertisers will bounce this page, and will not come back.”

Very good information to know and I am very grateful that this guy emailed me so quickly after installation. I read this and went back into the output.php file and edited a few hard coded hyperlinks to point to my Sponsorship page and then moved the actual purchase action links within that page.

I also edited the CSS styling of the payment form to match the general look and feel of DotSauce so potential sponsors would feel more comfortable.

oio-publisher.png

Added Benefits

This is a screen capture of the member’s area at OIOPublisher.com where you can manage your marketplace listings and affiliate earnings. OIO pays an incredible 50% sales commission for paid referrals.

This plugin will save you countless hours of data management and communication with advertisers by automatically notifying you and your advertisers about their ads and reminding them when to renew.

OIO Publisher is essentially your turn-the-key and profit solution for selling ads on your blog.

Purchase and Download

Costing you a one time $37, a bargain, a steal, a down payment on your ticket to profiting with your blogs from direct advertising sales. OIO Publisher is a must have wordpress plugin for the serious blog.

Are Your Website Visitors Blind? This Video Can Help YOU See the Light

StomperNet is an online business-building membership website. They currently have some great quality videos published online featuring “cutting-edge content.” I’d like to share with you their “Click Fu” video which I found to be an excellent learning experience.

I have embedded the “Click Fu” course video in this post. In total it is 30 minutes long, separated into four parts, but is worth every minute of your time. You will learn through the eyes of your website visitors how to optimize your content.

Part 1: Welcome to Click Fu!

Part 2: Click Fu – Understanding Visitors

Part 3: Click Fu – Optimizing Text Content

Part 4: Click Fu – Wrapping Things Up

I downloaded and toyed with their “Scrutinizer” utility mentioned in the video. It allows you to simulate how a visitor envisions your page layout. Their vision is narrowly focused, contrasting colors are emphasized and peripheral vision is blurred so, as you learned in the Click Fu videos, you need to group important data and links together and organize headers and navigation properly.

Here is a screenshot of the Scrutinizer application in action viewing the DotSauce Forums. Wherever you place you mouse the surrounding area goes out of focus.

scrutinizer-dotsauce-forums.png

The StomperNet Scrutinizer download is free.
Give it a try and scrutinize you website content.

10 Uses for the Scrutinizer Utility

1. Simulate eye tracking in a usability task
2. Assess the ease of use of multi-step processes
3. Give your designer a fresh pair of eyes
4. Find out what “pops” in your design
5. Conduct findability challenges
6. Ask: does your visual grid work?
7. Evaluate your site’s contrast levels
8. Insure learnability in your template
9. Avoid button gravity errors
10. Tell the story of how your eyes work
