GoDaddy Simplifies Domain Ownership Transfer

After making a few domain sales yesterday and this morning I was surprised to see GoDaddy had updated the domain ownership transfer process to make it more simple and secure.

godaddyaccountchng.gif

Instead of having to ask the new owner their mailing address, phone number and other private contact information, you simply need to have them provide you their account name and email address.

This change will provide peace of mind and save time for both parties.

As one of the largest domain name registrars, many hundreds if not thousands of domain names change hands through GoDaddy accounts. The process is painless and free and almost everybody has a GoDaddy account, which is why they are my registrar of choice as a domainer.

“.ME” Domain Name Sunrise and Landrush Dates Announced!

Originally announced by DotSauce here the country of Montenegro was granted the .ME domain name top-level by ICANN. It was later announced that GoDaddy.com and the Affilias Registry will be managing the new .ME domain names.

After reading the press release it sounds like they are expecting the .ME Landrush to go similarly to the original .TV domain launch. Auctioning the premium domain names is fine and dandy but hopefully they optimize the auction platform and handle the recurring registration fees well.

.ME domains, with their universal appeal, are expected to be in high demand. So some “premium” names – including verb-oriented domains, such as “Contact.ME,” “Drive.ME” or “Fly.ME,” – will be held back for auction after Open Registration.

Official “.ME” Rollout Schedule

Finally we have some concrete time frames for the public launch of the .ME domain names!

May 6 to May 20: General Sunrise Period. During this time, anyone with a trademark is eligible to apply for a .ME domain.

May 20 to June 6: Quiet Period. The registry will be closed to registrars. Sunrise auctions will begin for names that received multiple applications. .ME domain names that receive only one application will be awarded.

June 6 to June 26: Landrush. This is the first opportunity for the public at large to apply. Anyone who doesn’t have a trademark, but is interested in a specific .ME domain, can apply during this period. This is also when Sunrise challenges begin.

June 26 to July 15: Quiet Period. During this time, the registry is closed to registrars. Names for which there was only one application during the Landrush Period are allocated. Landrush auctions will begin for names that received multiple applications.

July 17: Open Registration. Domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Domain Registration Price Increase Beginning October 1st

Today, we received a copy of an email which was sent out to all ICANN accredited domain name registrars. You can review the original message below.

Beginning October 1st 2008 there will be a domain price increase.

The price for a .COM domain name registration will increase 7% from the current base price $6 to $6.86. This does not include ¢0.25 ICANN fee and registrar markup.

According to the ICANN-VeriSign Settlement, this 7% price increase can and may be implemented each and every year. This may be a good time to bulk-renew your domain names and register new domains while pricing remains low.

The Tucows portfolio team strategically sells some of its names via live and silent auction, some are bundled and sold individually to interested parties, and some are leased to businesses on a multi-year term.

Real Gems or Cheap Imitations?

Some may find the claim that these domains are “premium” or “gems” to be false. In my opinion they have excellent development and branding potential. Many could be used to compliment existing companies and organizations. The age of these domains (majority registered prior 2000) plays a factor in increased value as well.

This announcement by Tucows may be intended to drum up interest for potential investors. I would have to agree that the current (AMEX: TCX) stock price of $.68 per share does not reflect the value of their domain portfolio.

Domain Tasting Goes Sour: ICANN Will No Longer Issue Registration Refunds

During a special meeting of the ICANN Board of Directors a resolution was passed which will end domain tasting as we know it. The discussion was sparked in response to the scandalous practice of Network Solutions hijacking domain searches in recent weeks. Oddly enough, the industry can be thankful to Net Sol for getting the snowball rolling on the end of domain tasting.

Grace Period Abuse Leads to the End

In this preliminary report, you will see the acronym AGP thrown around alot. AGP stands for “Add Grace Period” an idea initially created to reimburse domain registrants for names they accidentally registered or miss-typed.

The official resolution states, “The practice of ‘domain tasting,’ by which names are registered and then deleted during the AGP, has grown at a very great rate since 2005, with tens of millions of domains registered and deleted each month.”

And the kicker… “The Board believes that the withdrawal of ICANN’s waiver of ICANN’s non-refundable transaction fee to the deletion of names within the AGP will substantially end the practice of abusing the AGP.”

A voice vote was taken of all Board Members present and the motion was approved by a vote of 13-0.

What does this mean for the domaining industry?

This change in policy will improve many aspects of domaining in general;

  • The typo-squatting business will plummet as domain tasting is somewhat essential for profitable typo choices.
  • Expired domain after-market will thrive as lists begin to be “cleansed” from these bogus tasted names.
  • Pay-Per-Click parking services may become more reputable as domains will be long standing and garner targeted traffic.
  • Registrars will become more credible down the road, because in many cases they themselves were the biggest players in domain tasting.
  • Domainers will not have to worry about companies stealing WHOIS search data.

It is not certain when this change will begin to take effect, but sources reveal it may be within a month.

What are your thoughts on this revolutionary news?
