Reducing Bounce Rate and Increasing Website Usability

“Bounce Rate” is when a person visits a page on your website and then immediately clicks through to a different website. As webmasters we would love for people to browse several pages of our website and explore our content in depth. This then gives us more of a chance to impress the visitor so that they may subscribe and visit again, more page impressions and essentially more revenue.

Here are some tips for reducing bounce rate on your websites and improving the experience for your visitors.

Watch a Friend Browse Your Site

Ask a friend or family member to browse your website casually while you look over their shoulder. This can be extremely beneficial as it helps you see things you may have overlooked. Don’t give them any direction other than to explore the site as they want. You may be surprised how they choose to navigate and what areas they completely ignore.

Analyzing Visitor Statistics

I highly recommend using an advanced statistics logging software such as Google Analytics. This can provide you with an easy to read view of your most popular pages, where people are coming from and what they are clicking on. By getting into the mindset of your visitors you can optimize your navigation and content to be user friendly.

Study Common Exit Pages

Google Analytics provides data on “Top Exit Pages.” These are the pages where the majority of your visitors are leaving your website from. Sometimes this is normal, such as when you are referring a popular product or service elsewhere on the web. Other times you may want to question why that page is causing people to leave your website.

Optimize Your Home Link

A link to your home page should be prominently displayed in your navigation bar. Make it very easy to find, highly visible and keep it in the same location on every page. This link is essentially your visitors way of finding more of your content after landing on one of your sub-pages or individual articles.

Optimize Your About Page

This is probably the most important page you can have on your website. A reliable statistic that I have now lost but remember quite well informed me that an “About” link is the most visited page after a first-time visitor lands on your website. Tell a little bit about who you are and what content can be found on your website, highlight some of your best content areas and articles, and provide contact information. Here are some more tips from ProBlogger about creating an about page.

User Friendly Navigation

Provide your visitors with a clean and prominent navigation system. It has been found that a horizontal bar at the top of your page works best. If you have to use a list style format in you sidebar that is alright, but make it simple, short and sweet. If you have alot of content to navigate it is important to use category labels for your navigation, this prevents the user from having to scan an entire list of page names and improves usability.

Heat Mapping Software

Heat Mapping is essentially a way to visually view what links and areas your visitors are clicking on. CrazyEgg software provides a free heat mapping account which allows you to track up to 5000 visits per month. This is a simple way to observe what areas of your site need improvement.

Hope these tips and tricks helped you out with your websites!

Four Letter Domains: The New Vanity License Plate

Take for example, a domain I registered earlier this month, “RSXJ.com” this was an expired domain that I caught by chance. Mind you, it has been a few weeks after all of the four letter domains were registered. My first impression of the domain name concluded that this was the perfect domain for an “RSX Junkie” or some old Joe, John, Jacob, Jingle, Jack and Jill, all of whom drive Acura RSX’s of course.

Some people are buying LLLL.com (four letter) domains and using them as personalized license plates.

I don’t know about you, but I want one! I’m on the lookout for an LLLL.com domain that has some meaning to me as a web developer and domainer. If you have any suggestions let me know.

  • LLLL.com Domain Name ~ $50
  • Fee for Vanity License Plate ~ $30
  • Having that hotty in the Beamer hit you up on Facebook – Priceless!

If vanity plates don’t rev your engine, you could always just go for a custom vinyl domain name sticker to slap on your windshield.

Entrecard Blog Network Delivers Traffic

EntreCard is a fun new social blog network that delivers traffic. Each member places a small widget (See sidebar) on their website which displays a 125×125 advertisement for an approved Entrecard member each day. You earn Entrecard credits (EC) by visiting member’s websites and “dropping” your card with the click of your mouse.

Networking With Entrecard

Many bloggers have shown skepticism towards the quality of traffic that Entrecard delivers and characteristics seemingly similar to sketchy paid to click programs. However, there is one thing they cannot deny, we are all receiving a significant amount of visitors. Here is a quick break-down of the current number of Entrecard members in 5 specific categories that I have shown interest in.

  • Computers & Internet (83)
  • Internet Marketing (91)
  • Make Money Online (158)
  • Technology (55)
  • Web Development (36)

That’s 423 Entrecard enabled websites that I want to network with and possibly have an opportunity to promote DotSauce for essentially no cost! It is true that a large majority of click-through visitors will drop their card on your widget and leave for the day. Will those people come back? Yes. Will some of them stick around and comment, subscribe, contribute? Yes!

I have discovered many quality sites that peaked my interest since joining Entrecard such as The Mad Hat, True Blue Titan, Mark Lloyd and Bloggers Showroom to name a few.

Blogosphere Buzzing About Entrecard

There are lots of rave reviews of Entrecard. I’ve also found some excellent tips and a tool for saving you time while dropping cards (and earning credits to spend on advertising).

Sign up with Entrecard today and immediately start getting new visitors, discovering new websites and networking with bloggers in your industry.

Google to Handle Subdomains as Regular Folders in Search Results

Search Engine Roundtable published an article this week with some information they received from Matt Cutts of Google regarding the way subdomains will be treated in Google’s search engine results pages (SERPS). This is what Matt announced at PubCon:

Google will very soon begin treating subdomains and subdirectories the same in this fashion: there will be only 2 total urls from a domain in any set of search results, so no more getting 3, 4 or however many spots via subdomains. We didn’t get any more information than just that basic heads-up.

Currently sub-domains are treated as a separate entity, allowing for websites to have multiple results show up. For example here is a screen capture of a navigational search for the query “Search Engine Roundtable“…

Search Engine Roundtable Results

How Will This Affect Business?

Search Engine Land has some interesting insight into the implications of a change like this. In the following example the top 3 results for a search on “macbook” are displayed.

Macbook Search

You will notice the 4th result is from the store.apple.com subdomain. Losing these types of subdomain results could cause significant traffic loss and a noticeable decline in profits for some big business.

How Will This Affect Users?

Some say this will allow for more diversity and better search results on the whole. There are some interesting comments from both sides of the fence on this issue at this Sphinn page. In light of all this, the Google bots are doing some good things such as the recent increase in possible “Sitelinks” for popular websites.
