Competitors Lack Many Important Features

Currently the domain industry has three sources which aggregate and deliver domain news.

  • DNHour - A website powered by the Pligg script which is plagued by spam links and has virtually no organization or social features. Voting can easily be duped by deleting cookies or voting on different computers.
  • Domaining.com - An excellent resource for top domain blogs, but lacks versatility, customization, voting and commentary.
  • Discussion Forums - Rarely updated and often only displaying the biggest news items.

The Domainer’s Community is fulfilling the need for a one-stop stable and easy to use domain industry news source.  Please join us and contribute your favorite domaining resources, news, photos and videos.

Smeego CMS Goes Live: Is this a Dream Web Development Opportunity?

Smeego is a newly released content management system that you may mistake for PHP Nuke. The developer sold PHP- Nuke and has since moved on releasing Smeego CMS on June 5th as an open source web portal software. Many PHP-Nuke enthusiasts are already converting.

Business Development Opportunity

Released under the terms of the GNU/GPL license, Smeego can be used to develop commercial web properties at no cost. You can in-turn sell these web properties without any restrictions or licensing troubles. This is a major bonus for web developers of all kinds especially those who are currently developing blogs and businesses on platforms like WordPress. Smeego provides an alternate and promising avenue for developing websites.

User Generated Content & Social Actions

The out-dated concept of the “web portal” is now beginning to merge with social networking features, focusing on users sharing content and contributing to a community of like minded individuals. Smeego champions user powered content with friendly features that allow submissions of blogs, downloads, links, articles and news from your website visitors.

Features and Functionality

  • Fully integrated File Downloads manager
  • Open submission Links Directory
  • Email to Friend and Printer Friendly Pages
  • Automatically generated Mobile friendly version
  • Theme/template system
  • FAQ Manager
  • Website Statistics
  • Polls and Surveys manager
  • Reviews manager (Books, games, etc.)
  • Banner Advertising manager

As you can see from the list above, Smeego has some seriously cool features. This comprehensive CMS also has module management. New modules and features will be released by developers in the coming weeks.

Smeego Case Study: XboxMVP.com

Immediately after hearing about the release of Smeego a few days ago I downloaded a copy and choose to give it a go as a development option for my domain, XboxMVP.com which has great community potential.

This project starts off as one of the default templates called “Orange” which comes bundled with Smeego. I did some simple modifications to the CSS style options, then created a graphical logo and header design to replace the default white box and orange slice.

“Blocks” were customized to make their titles more relevant to the Xbox niche. Several blocks (Statistics, Advertising. etc.) were not needed during initial development and were deactivated from public view.

Now all that is left to do is promote and create content which is easily managed through the Reviews, News, Polls, and Stories modules!

Small Businesses Expect to Invest in Internet Services this Year

Promising news for web developers, designers, domainers, SEO gurus… let’s just say the internet industry in general! If you are a specialist in any of these fields you will be happy to hear what small businesses will be buying this year.

Register.com, one of the oldest and most respected domain name registrars, conducted a survey of 800 small businesses. The results speak volumes for the ability of the internet industry to thrive in economic down times.

“Despite the slumping economy, most small businesses do not anticipate a decline in revenue over the next year, and many expect to make additional investments in Web site design, SEO and e-mail marketing, according to Register.com’s newly released “Small Business Survey.” Register.com conducted the online survey over a three-week period from April 28 to May 16, polling 800 small businesses.

When asked which areas of technology they are mostly likely to invest in, the top three answers were: Web site design (53%), SEO (43%) and e-mail marketing (41%).

Seventy percent of those polled said they do not expect Web revenue to decline this year despite the struggling economy.”

—Carol Krol of BtoB Magazine

If you haven’t considered offering your professional services as a means of income, now may be a good time to consider getting to know some of your local businesses and working with them to create a web presence.

Reducing Bounce Rate and Increasing Website Usability

“Bounce Rate” is when a person visits a page on your website and then immediately clicks through to a different website. As webmasters we would love for people to browse several pages of our website and explore our content in depth. This then gives us more of a chance to impress the visitor so that they may subscribe and visit again, more page impressions and essentially more revenue.

Here are some tips for reducing bounce rate on your websites and improving the experience for your visitors.

Watch a Friend Browse Your Site

Ask a friend or family member to browse your website casually while you look over their shoulder. This can be extremely beneficial as it helps you see things you may have overlooked. Don’t give them any direction other than to explore the site as they want. You may be surprised how they choose to navigate and what areas they completely ignore.

Analyzing Visitor Statistics

I highly recommend using an advanced statistics logging software such as Google Analytics. This can provide you with an easy to read view of your most popular pages, where people are coming from and what they are clicking on. By getting into the mindset of your visitors you can optimize your navigation and content to be user friendly.

Study Common Exit Pages

Google Analytics provides data on “Top Exit Pages.” These are the pages where the majority of your visitors are leaving your website from. Sometimes this is normal, such as when you are referring a popular product or service elsewhere on the web. Other times you may want to question why that page is causing people to leave your website.

Optimize Your Home Link

A link to your home page should be prominently displayed in your navigation bar. Make it very easy to find, highly visible and keep it in the same location on every page. This link is essentially your visitors way of finding more of your content after landing on one of your sub-pages or individual articles.

Optimize Your About Page

This is probably the most important page you can have on your website. A reliable statistic that I have now lost but remember quite well informed me that an “About” link is the most visited page after a first-time visitor lands on your website. Tell a little bit about who you are and what content can be found on your website, highlight some of your best content areas and articles, and provide contact information. Here are some more tips from ProBlogger about creating an about page.

User Friendly Navigation

Provide your visitors with a clean and prominent navigation system. It has been found that a horizontal bar at the top of your page works best. If you have to use a list style format in you sidebar that is alright, but make it simple, short and sweet. If you have alot of content to navigate it is important to use category labels for your navigation, this prevents the user from having to scan an entire list of page names and improves usability.

Heat Mapping Software

Heat Mapping is essentially a way to visually view what links and areas your visitors are clicking on. CrazyEgg software provides a free heat mapping account which allows you to track up to 5000 visits per month. This is a simple way to observe what areas of your site need improvement.

Hope these tips and tricks helped you out with your websites!

RSS Feed Powered Websites: An Alternative to Domain Parking

One of my NamePros buddy’s, Leland recently launched ThemeLab.com, an amazing WordPress resource website featuring free professional quality themes for your WordPress powered blogs and websites. You can also find some insightful articles related to WordPress development.

One such article is targeted at domain owners who either do not park their domain names or are looking for an alternative. Pay-Per-Click revenue shares can often times be very low, especially if your targeted keywords are not in high demand.

Put Your Dormant Domains to Use with WordPress

In his article, “Put Your Dormant Domains to Use with WordPress” Leland explains the process of creating a RSS feed powered website which will syndicate RSS feeds, keeping your content fresh and of course giving credit to the feed source.

Leland says… “This isn’t a guide on making content scraping/rewriting splogs. I’m merely going over a much more efficient way to monetize unused domains, or possibly to augment your current blog with regularly updated news from relevant feeds. Aggregating RSS feeds legally is a perfectly legitimate way to add content to your WordPress blog.”

Benefits of WordPress Powered “Parking”

  • Much more SEO friendly than conventional parked landing pages
  • Content is fresh and regularly updated
  • Ability to sell direct advertising
  • Earn 100% revenue share, cut out the middle man
  • Include other revenue streams such as affiliate programs
  • Insert unique content and articles
  • Gain repeat visitors or “subscribers”

The process is quite simple. Install WordPress along with a special plugin (FeedWordPress) and make a few changes to your template files. The benefits seem to make RSS feed powered websites a much better alternative to domain parking. Read the article for complete instructions and to get started!

“Now is the time to dump those stagnant parked pages and start developing your unused domains into dynamic and content-rich websites.”

What are your thoughts? Do you currently use RSS feed powered websites to “park” and develop your domain portfolio? I would love to hear what you have to say, please leave a comment.
