2009 ccTLD Buzz! Plus: The .MX Domain Extension Making a Comeback After 20 Years

NIC Mexico has announced the upcoming public launch schedule of the .MX ccTLD (Country Code) domain extension.  Since 1989, after limited registrations by a few Mexican institutes, the .MX extension was closed for new registrations. Now, 20 years later, .MX is once again open for business.

This may present a good opportunity for domainers seeking to test the waters in ccTLD investing, myself included.  Continue reading below for other interesting ccTLD happenings.

logonicmx.gifLike other major ccTLD public launches (such as Montenegro’s .ME domains) there is what’s known as a sunrise period and a landrush period.  The general public will be able to register .MX domains September 1st.

However, It seems that if you own a .COM.MX domain you may register your exact corresponding .MX domain on March 1st.

.MX Domain Registration Schedule

  • March 01 to July 31, 2009: owners of domain names in the five sub-extensions (.COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, .GOB.MX) can register their sites with the .MX extension. The new domain names will be registered under exactly the same name as the previous domain names. If there are more than one domain name applicant with the same domain name, the one with proof of having the name for longer will be granted the .MX domain name of the same name.
  • August 1 to August 31, 2009: during the transition period, the register will analyze the requests received for domain name registration.
  • September 1 to October 31, 2009: the .MX domain names will be open to everyone (general registration period) on a “first come, first served” basis.

In Other ccTLD News…

TheDomains is discussing issues concerning ICANN’s latest confusing policy on gTLD (Geographic domain names such as .NYC, .Paris, .Berlin) and the serious implications this might have on the domain industry.

Can ccTLDs Earn You $3000 a Day?

Rick Latona is talking about it and Sahar Sarid gave his commentary. It seems like everybody is talking about the revenue potential of ccTLDs (Country Code) domain names.

3000aday-static.gifThanks to some cool videos from the people behind the scenes at $3000 A Day Domainer, the public is seeing first hand and possibly for the first time ever, a domainers’ success story built on ccTLDs.

The WordPress Wiki Theme is extremely clean, easy on the eyes and built for quickly delivering the content your visitor wants to see.

You can actually choose from 6 different color variations on installation and the PhotoShop files are included to customize the logo.

Other Wiki scripts and software are bulky and may be intimidating. While they may possess more features, this Wiki theme is built for speed and will surely impress website visitors as well as search engines.

Plugin Ready Features

Going beyond the call of duty, the WordPress Wiki Theme features a custom built FAQ plugin as well as integration with a star rating plugin and an advanced page navigation plugin.

Also included is a simple but highly-effective “Related Posts” section in the sidebar of each article.

Many of the WordPress Wiki Theme elements are enhanced with AJAX for better usability and definitely some cool factor.

Just What Is Domaining?

Morgan Linton has just announced the 2nd video installment of his Domaining Power Course. In an earlier post, Morgan says, “We are in a niche market. Ask a random person on the street if they know what ‘Domaining’ is and 999 out of 1000 times – they won’t know.” This really holds true, you may say “I buy and sell .COM names,” but even then they won’t truly grasp the idea.

These videos are great for sharing with our friends and family because they are aimed at absolute beginners who don’t really know what our industry is or how to get started.  If you know someone who might be interested in getting involved with buying and selling domain names, definitely pass them a link to these videos!

Domaining Power Course: Lesson #2 – Buying Domain Names (YouTube)
Domaining Power Course: Lesson #1 – What is Domaining? (YouTube)

Sharing these videos with people increases awareness and credibility of the domain industry and eventually will increase the value of our domain names!

YouTube really is an effective way at spreading the good gospel of Domaining. If you think about it, not many people want to read a series of articles about a topic they really have no idea about. Great job Morgan, keep it up.

If you know of a local business or associate who does not have a web presence, tell them to check out this article which explains 5 reasons why they should be investing in domain names and how domains can benefit any business.

GoodURLBadURL.blogspot.com

AaronGoldman.net is a search engine marketer by day and a URL (domain name) critic by night.  Today, Aaron sat down and gave his opinion on all of the domain names which appeared in this years Superbowl commercials.  If you visited Domaining.com it looked a little something like this…

goodurlbadurl.gif

And the list went on…

Spread the posts out a little next time please?

While I generally agree with Aaron’s opinions of what a good domain name is, it gets a little redundant.  We all know the basics and the whole GoodURLBadURL blog can be summed up by his “Best Practices” criteria (found in the side-bar).

I suppose his opinions could also be considered marketing advice since he is also critiquing commercials and advertisements.  But again, we all should  know how to display and place our domain names prominently within advertisements.

Sorry about the title of this post, I couldn’t help myself.

SEOMoz Promo Code: Try SEOMoz PRO For Just a Dollar!

I thought I would pass along this exciting email I just received from SEOMoz.  This SEOMoz promo code saves you alot of cash and allows you a full month of access to the best SEO tools available today. I will be upgrading my account to take full advantage of the many SEOMoz PRO features.

I am especially excited about their newest tool, Linkscape, which is proclaimed to be a game changer. SEOMoz Pro members get 20 in-depth Linkscape reports on any website.

Well here is a copy of the announcement… check it out:

As a special thank you for your support, here’s a gift that will (in my humble opinion) have an enormous, positive impact on your SEO performance in 2009: a full month of SEOmoz’s PRO membership for only $1.

There’s only one itsy bitsy teeny catch: because we offer one-on-one Q+A with the SEOmoz staff, we’ve had to limit the number of places available at the discounted rate. So while we’re sending this offer out to 122,451 SEOmoz members, it’s only valid for the first 5,000 people who respond. Don’t delay – we’ll be promoting our once-in-a-lifetime $1 offer on the blog on Monday, February 9th. So act now, before the riotous, can’t-be-tamed masses hear of this.

To claim your first month of PRO membership for just $1, visit www.seomoz.org/trypro and enter SUCCESS09 as your promo code. The SEOmoz coupon code expires February 13th (that’s next Friday), but remember, space is limited.

I hope you have a prosperous 2009!

Thanks,
Rand

P.S. Here’s the link again, just in case you missed it :-) To claim your full month of PRO member services for just $1, visit http://www.seomoz.org/trypro (using SUCCESS09 in the promo code!)

Already an SEOMoz Pro member? Going to give the $1 trial a go? Please leave a comment about your experience with their services.

Pligg 1.0 Launched – A Social CMS with Great Geo Domain Potential

I just received word that Pligg, an open-source content management system (CMS), has just released a major version update.

pligg_logo.gifYou may be familiar with domain news aggregator DNHour.com which uses the original version. DotSauce also featured Pligg as one of 10 Outstanding Scripts for Developing Domains.

Pligg can be compared to sites like Digg or Mixx in that users submit links to news and media for other users to vote and comment on.  However, the developers seem to want to get away from the stigma that Pligg is just another link farm.

Learning New Tricks & Squashing Bad Habits

With the release of Pligg 1.0 you will find more social features, custom page creation, and a whole suite of modules developed by the creators and I’m sure the Pligg community will be contributing additional modules soon.

One of the biggest problems with the original Pligg was the massive amounts of spam submissions.  Fortunately, new Pligg modules Blackball and Scarecrow v.01 claim to “Trap, Block, Poison, and Punish Bad Bots.”

Could Pligg Work for Geo Domains?

On the Pligg homepage, a beautiful example site is featured prominently called DCVacationSource.com – Best Washington, DC Attractions. Yes, we know this isn’t the greatest name, but the way they are using the new Pligg CMS is quite visually appeasing, user friendly and extremely promising as a geo domain hub.

dc-vacations.jpg

Instead of allowing open submissions of content, the DC Vacation Source site owners have listed specific restaurants, hotels and attractions where users can comment, rate and review!

Yes, other software is capable of these actions, but Pligg is handling it quite nicely with the added benefit of social features for members and, of course, Pligg is free!

Would love to hear if you give Pligg a try!  Please leave a comment below.
